Shouldn’t we all be developers?

We need more homes and that’s a fact. We need volume, light and character. We need liberated rules. We need imagination to unlock forgotten plots. ‘Shouldn’t we all be developers’ articulates Roger Zogolovitch’s vision for recognition of the independent and creative developer playing their part to generate supply of new homes in the UK and beyond to meet population demand. Housing as a human right is the premise. Shouldn't we all be developers? first edition sold out in 2016. The second edition was published in September 2018. How to purchase the book: Via RIBA Bookshops or Amazon. An ebook edition is also available on Amazon which can be read on Kindle, smartphone, tablet etc. Zogolovitch works on ‘the backlands and the badlands that lurk behind the formal facades of the city’. His is ‘the territory of the forgotten’. The book draws on his experience of building on gap sites in London, examining each…

The London School of Architecture

Solidspace is part of The London School of Architecture practice network and this year, our director Petra Marko is teaching the Design Cities module and co-leading the Design Think Tank on the theme 'Generational Shift'. We believe there is a role for architect-developers and engaging with architecture education from client perspective. Expanding practice beyond the role of architect is vital for the profession to stay relevant and we look forward to support the students in their research and design investigating how to unlock opportunities in the city.  The LSA is England's first independent school of architecture since the Architectural Association opened in 1847. Described internationally as ‘possibly the most ambitious’ of alternative educational models, the LSA has been said to show how ‘innovation and high standards are perfectly compatible’ and how ‘beneficial change can be achieved within existing institutional frameworks’. Modern Methods of Construction

As a company we are also keen to push the boundaries of what is possible in design and development and we are always looking at new ways of building and working with our Solidspace DNA. In July 2017 it has been announced by Create Streets and the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood Forum, that our scheme for 28 Solidspace Connect units – precast concrete, split-level, shell apartments – is one of three winners for the Mount Pleasant Phase 2 competition. The competition emerged from the local community's desire to see housing that reflected their needs. "Judges were impressed with your entry for a number of reasons. Leaving room for community involvement in a number of parts of the appearance of the building was a positive consideration. Your attempt to maximise internal volume and use large windows to maximise light was also impressive - judges recognised that this would create high-quality interiors to the flats in the scheme.…

Making it Different

Making It Different addresses the challenges of housing in our ever growing urban environments. Published in 2013 to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery, it features the fascinating collaboration between Roger Zogolovitch, architect and developer, and Peter Wylie, artist. The book explores homes in the sky space as the next territory in the city. In contrast to what has gone before, Roger and Peter’s vision incorporates existing cityscapes. By acknowledging what stands and not bulldozing to start afresh, cities grow in celebration of their pasts, extending upwards, whilst retaining their identity with respect to their histories. The limited edition book includes an introduction by Fred Scott of the Royal College of Art, 11 monoprint plates of the manifesto by Roger Zogolovitch and linoprints and paintings of two experimental sites. Copies cost £25, please contact us if you would like to buy a copy. Edition of 75   More publication projects

Development as Art

The Solidspace Manifesto, entitled Development as Art, was published in 2007. The first edition which includes eight monoprints is in the Tate’s collection of artists’ books. The manifesto is at the heart of Solidspace culture. It’s underpins our approach to everything. The Open University

Intermittently, we have been in discussion with the Open University, investigating the qualitative benefits of living in a home that has been designed volumetrically. Whilst homes in England have been typically designed in response to a prescriptive regulatory framework we wish to challenge this by working from an understanding of how the home is actually used. Research staff from the Open University’s design group visited Stapleton Hall Road and invited volunteers interested in Solidspace to walk around the homes wearing eye tracking glasses to gather data about what people look at when they experience a Solidspace home, so that we can better understand the benefits of the additional space in the split-level layout. The gathered data has not yet been analysed. More on the Open University can be found here… www.open.ac.uk

Loughborough University

We are collaborating with Loughborough University on Moden Methods of Construction for Solidspace split-level units. Solidspace units are formed from in-situ concrete, which is a material that provides thermal mass, fire and sound insulation and an engineering solution that responds to the infill sites where Solidspace developments are located. Solidspace has been a sponsor and joint venture partner with Loughborough University’s Civil and Building Engineering Department for over three years, supporting an Engineering Doctorate project on innovation of concrete structures for housing on infill sites. This work uses prefabricated formwork, which is re-usable up to 100 times and hand lifted. This research has directly influenced our Solidspace Connect designs. The image above shows the first prototype testing an innovative concrete pouring technique that allows us to pour both horizontally and vertically at the same time to create large bespoke slabs as shown.
