Groves Natcheva Architects

We worked with Groves Natcheva Architects on the first single home Solidspace project, Zog House. This is now home to Gus Zogolovitch and his four children. This project allowed us to prove that the Solidspace DNA was a workable and flexible solution to modern living whilst remaining true to the surroundings of this area of North London.   Groves Natcheva Architects, in their own words... Groves Natcheva Architects is a collaboration between Murray Groves and Adriana Natcheva, established in London in 2000. Architecture rests uneasily in the world of design. A building is not an artefact, an instrument, or a garment, yet it is contemplated, used, and—in a sense—worn. Contemporary architecture stumbles from one to another of this plurality of aspects, never sure to which it ought to cleave hardest, pulled this way and that by the prevailing fashion. Some architects bend materials to their own ideas, others let their ideas be…

Mole Architects

We are working with Meredith Bowles of Mole Architects on The Houseboat which we are building in Poole. This is an experimental architectural design project with a more organic form than other Solidspace rectilinear projects. We are currently on site and expect to see the final product this spring.   Mole Architects, in their own words... Mole Architects is a progressive award-winning practice based in Cambridgeshire, and have designed some of the UK’s most critically acclaimed houses over the last 10 years. Meredith Bowles’ first building- a house for himself in the Cambridgeshire Fens- was shortlisted for the Architect’s Journal First Building award, and went on to win a number of awards including the RIBA Manser Medal, awarded for the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. Subsequently the practice has gone on to design a number of houses, mostly in rural areas. The Elias-Macey House in Cambridge was a finalist of the…

Platterform

We worked with Platterform on our Skyroom Project when they transformed this space into a temporary restaurant and bar in 2013. They hosted a whole series of events and the place became a popular local haunt. Platterform, in their own words... www.platterform.com   More collaborators

Wayward Plant Registry

We worked with Heather Ring of the Wayward Plant Registry to create the Union Street Urban Orchard on our site on Union Street. This was a temporary project that lasted one harvest and saw 85 fruit trees and countless other plants transforming our site into a community garden. The following hear she also realised the Urban Physics Garden on the same site that explored medicinal plants. Wayward Plant Registry, in their own words... Wayward takes a unique approach to landscape architecture through the creation of narrative environments. Our landscapes express stories that connect people through nature, creating vibrant places that are productive, meaningful and imaginative.   More architect collaborators

Sara Muzio

Artist, film director and architect, Sara Muzio has spearheaded our meanwhile projects on Union Street and worked closely with EXYZT to realise the Southwark Lido, the Lake and The Reunion. Sara Muzio, in her own words... Sara Muzio is an artist, film director and architect. Having lived, travelled and studied across Europe and Latin America, Sara has a precise sensibility in cross-cultural approaches to cultural, social and economic development, with a particular focus on the metabolism of cities. With a degree in Architecture from Cambridge University and an MA in Animation from the Royal College of Art, Sara’s extensive body of research and cultural production – including films, books and large-scale public installations – combines excellence in design and aesthetics with an in-depth understanding of cultural, social and economic exclusion. Sara’s projects contest, re-articulate and counteract different forms of marginalisation in imaginative and compelling ways, revealing beauty and hope in unlikely places.…

EXYZT

EXYZT is a design collective that works to activate empty plots and spaces within cities. As Independent Developers we have tried to champion meanwhile projects and have actively commissioned projects on our site on Union Street that was empty for many years. We have had an ongoing collaboration with EXYZT to activate this site and have together created the Southwark Lido, the Lake and The Reunion.   EXYZT, in their own words... EXYZT is a ‘platform for multidisciplinary creation’ whose aim is to challenge the view of architecture as an independent field of practice. Instead, they embark on experimental living ventures built collectively. The collective conceive and organise each project as a playground in which cultural behaviours and shared stories relate, mix and mingle. Each project, always strive to involve different constituencies of the local community in a social network that is invited to inhabit a temporary space.   More architect collaborators

Poulsom Middlehurst

We are working with Poulsom Middlehurst on our first custom-build project in Blenheim Grove. The project emerged from a group of local residents with young families who were keen to build collectively. All homes at Blenheim Grove, include the Solidspace split-level DNA and will be available for sale with a variety of options for the new owner to customise as they wish.   Poulsom Middlehurst, in their own words... Poulsom Middlehurst is a creative design studio based in central London, founded by architects Amy Poulsom and Jane Middlehurst. After meeting during their studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, they went their separate ways within the field of architecture before combining their skills to establish Poulsom Middlehurst in late 2011. As a practice they believe in demystifying the design and construction process. Through workshops and free consultations, they provide an accessible, collaborative approach to architecture.   More architect collaborators

Modern Methods of Construction

As a company we are also keen to push the boundaries of what is possible in design and development and we are always looking at new ways of building and working with our Solidspace DNA. In July 2017 it has been announced by Create Streets and the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood Forum, that our scheme for 28 Solidspace Connect units – precast concrete, split-level, shell apartments – is one of three winners for the Mount Pleasant Phase 2 competition. The competition emerged from the local community's desire to see housing that reflected their needs. "Judges were impressed with your entry for a number of reasons. Leaving room for community involvement in a number of parts of the appearance of the building was a positive consideration. Your attempt to maximise internal volume and use large windows to maximise light was also impressive - judges recognised that this would create high-quality interiors to the flats in the scheme.…

The Houseboat

The Houseboat is a single house located on a site overlooking Poole Harbour. It is the winner of a the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award 2017 and a South West RIBA Award 2017 and has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards 2017. The Houseboat, designed in collaboration with Meredith Bowles of Mole Architects and executive architect Rebecca Granger has been conceived as two upturned hulls propping themselves together facing the sea, and is built with an in-situ concrete base and a Douglas Fir timber frame constructed shell. To experience Solidspace living, The Houseboat is available for holiday lettings. If you are interested to experience The Houseboat you can book your stay here. You can also watch The Modern House video where Roger Zogolovitch talks about The Houseboat.   The plan is butterfly in shape. Accommodation is split between the two wings connected with steps and landings bridging the voids. The building emerges with floor plates fanning out…

Open House London

Each year Solidspace opens it's doors for Open House London, a city-wide initiative that encourages the general public to explore buildings that are normally not accessible for viewing. We have had queues around the block for our Stapleton Hall Road project and at our site on Union Street when we showcased our Solidspace Connect ideas.   Open House London, in their own words... Open House was started in 1992 as a small, not-for-profit organisation to promote public awareness and appreciation of the capital's building design and architecture. The intention was to open up London's splendid buildings to the general public who don't otherwise have access. We saw this as a way of helping the wider community to become more knowledgeable, engage in dialogue and make informed judgements on architecture. Buildings surround us in a city but the one thing we do not learn about in schools is the fabric of a…

Making it Different

Making It Different addresses the challenges of housing in our ever growing urban environments. Published in 2013 to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery, it features the fascinating collaboration between Roger Zogolovitch, architect and developer, and Peter Wylie, artist. The book explores homes in the sky space as the next territory in the city. In contrast to what has gone before, Roger and Peter’s vision incorporates existing cityscapes. By acknowledging what stands and not bulldozing to start afresh, cities grow in celebration of their pasts, extending upwards, whilst retaining their identity with respect to their histories. The limited edition book includes an introduction by Fred Scott of the Royal College of Art, 11 monoprint plates of the manifesto by Roger Zogolovitch and linoprints and paintings of two experimental sites. Copies cost £25, please contact us if you would like to buy a copy. Edition of 75   More publication projects

Dark Angels

The Dark Angels programme is a series of residential writing courses tutored by John Simmons, Stuart Delves and Jamie Jauncey at different locations throughout the UK and Europe. Started in 2004,  these highly successful courses look at how to use words more engagingly and imaginatively within the business environment. Solidspace collaborated with Dark Angels and graphic designers Abrahams, to create From Home to Home, the award-winning hoarding around our development at Shepherdess Walk. Over a period of one year, the 12 writers contributing a line each (the last word became the first word in next line) which was spelled out using plastic scaffolding plugs inserted into a matrix of drilled holes. Visitors could peep through as construction progressed. The literary relay started and ended with ‘home’, with each line restricted to 34 characters. From Home to Home Home opens up your own vision of possible Possible dances new beginnings with joy Joy in your heart tread lightly with love Love and…
