81-87 Weston Street in the AJ

08.03.2018

Rob Wilson writes in the April 2018 edition of the AJ, "Ten years in the making, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’s slow-cooked mansion block at Weston Street for Solidspace is the latest of the developer’s signature split-level eat-live-work projects."  "The qualities of its materials and finish and the level of care in the detailing are everywhere evident – from the sharp tracing of timber formwork that mark finely cast concrete walls to the walnut and oak joinery which lines its interiors." "Everywhere there are thoughtful haptic details, like round, oak-flapped ventilation grilles, while some elements reference AHMM’s own design history: a desk sitting above a stair echoes the one they designed for the flat of the journalist Jeremy Melvin in an early project. While these are large flats, their generousness is in the vertical spatial flow – not the lateral spread..." "But, while this was never designed to be some kind…

Obsessed with concrete in Sunday Times

09.10.2016

"...people who like concrete can get quite obsessed” says Roger Zogolovitch. "Concrete is shedding its drab image and finding a place in the hearts of the smart set. First it was distressed timber. Then came exposed brick. Now, the latest rugged material to be fetishised by interior designers is concrete. For years, it’s been cherished only by a fringe of modern architects, and reviled by a public scarred by memories of 1960s brutalism, but the middle classes are suddenly going gaga for big grey slabs." You can read the full article by Hugh Graham in The Sunday Times here.

Solidspace in The Observer

07.02.2016

Journalist, Rowan Moore has reviewed our development at Shepherdess Walk in The Observer on 7 February 2016. He talks of the hidden depths of the project and remarks on the Solidspace DNA form as follows: "Inside, the homes are based on what their developer Roger Zogolovitch calls the “split section”, an idea he has explored on other smallish developments that his company Solidspace has dotted around the capital. This means that you progress up them from half-level to half-level, rather than whole floors at a time, which means that space flows through the building rather than being compartmentalised...The idea is to reflect contemporary ways of living, rather than replicate Victorian hierarchies that have long since disappeared. The arrangement also makes movement through the houses and apartments into imaginative journeys, with continuously changing shapes and proportions, falls of light, relationships of one room or level to another, and of interior to external…

A note to David Cameron

27.01.2016

Earlier this month it was announced that the Government has begun the process of identifying plots of land that can be sold to small and medium-sized developers in order to boost the building of new homes. In England, 32 local authorities have already started identifying plots that could be sold with planning permission. The idea will be piloted across five sites in the UK including Old Oak Common in North West London to begin with, in the hope that 30,000 affordable ‘starter homes’ can be built on brownfield sites over the next five years. Roger Zogolovitch, Creative Director of Solidspace, has for many years now championed the role of the small or independent developer to build on gap sites in the city and he has this response to David Cameron’s announcement: “Well done Prime Minister, your Christmas reading of my book ‘Shouldn’t we all be developer?’ has paid dividends. But read…

Impressions from WAF

25.11.2015

As judge at WAF - the World Architecture Festival - in Singapore recently I had the good fortune to see innovative projects from both south East Asia and around the world. The winner of the ‘new and old’ category was People’s Architecture Office for a pre-fab and ‘off grid’ solution to adapting and preserving the historic Hutongs in the Dashilar district of Beijing. Remembering that 70% of these traditional courtyard homes have been lost to new development, their 'plug-in' project, which they have designed, manufactured and installed, allows residents to modernise their ageing homes whilst preserving the existing character of these ancient buildings. It was heartening to see how this project has enabled residents to stay in a place that they know and love and has saved the demolition of an important piece of architectural history. A close contender was the Crane House in Singapore, by architects Ong&Ong. Their project…
